Is Therapy Right for Me? Let's Find Out!

You know, I get this question a lot: "Lakendra, how do I know if therapy is right for me?" And let me tell you something - therapy isn't just for folks dealing with major life crises or severe mental health issues. Nope, therapy is for anyone who wants to grow, heal, or just understand themselves a little better. And let's be real, who doesn't want that?

Why I Love Therapy (and Why You Might Too!)

It's the source of ALL MY POWER!

Okay, not exactly. Listen, as a Black woman and a mom, I know we often feel like we have to be superheroes 24/7. But here's a little secret - even superheroes need support sometimes! Therapy can be that support. It's like having a judgment-free zone where you can:

  • Improve your mental health by developing coping strategies for stress, anxiety, and depression

  • What this might look like in practice: Vent about that family drama without worrying about it getting back to your nosy aunt (you know the one 😉)

  • Enhance your relationships through better communication skills

  • What this might look like in practice: Figure out why you keep dating the same type of person (we've all been there!)

  • Foster personal growth and self-understanding

  • What this might look like in practice: Learn how to set boundaries with your kids, partner, or that coworker who just doesn't get it

  • Navigate the unique challenges of motherhood with support

  • What this might look like in practice: Navigate the wild ride of motherhood without losing yourself in the process

And the best part? You don't have to have it all figured out before you start. That's what therapy is for!

Finding Your Perfect Therapy Match

Now, I know what you're thinking - "Okay, Lakendra, I'm interested. But how do I find a therapist who gets me?" I got you, sis.

Here are some tips:

  • Start close to home: Check if your job offers an Employee Assistance Program (EAP). It's like a secret stash of free or cheap therapy sessions!

  • Insurance detective work: Call up your insurance company and ask about mental health coverage. Trust me, your wallet will thank you later.

  • Sliding scale is your friend: Don't have insurance? No worries! Many therapists (including yours truly) offer sliding scale fees. We want to help, not break your bank!

  • Seek out the specialists: Use sites like Psychology Today or Therapy for Black Girls to find therapists who specialize in what you need. Looking for someone who understands Black maternal mental health? Well, you're already in the right place with CLCS! 😊

What to Expect When You're Expecting... Therapy

Okay, so you've found a therapist. Now what? Here's a little sneak peek:

  • First session vibes: Think of it like a first date, but way less awkward. We'll chat about what brought you in and what you hope to get out of therapy.

  • Spill the tea: There's no such thing as TMI in therapy. Whatever's on your mind - work stress, relationship drama, mom guilt - let it out!

  • Homework (but the good kind): Sometimes we might give you little assignments to work on between sessions. It's all part of the growth process!

  • Frequency: We'll figure out a schedule that works for you. Weekly, bi-weekly, monthly - it's all good!

But What If...

I hear you - starting therapy can bring up a lot of "what ifs." What if I don't click with my therapist? What if I don't know what to talk about? What if I'm not "bad enough" for therapy?

Here's what I always tell my clients: Give it a few sessions. Therapy is like trying on shoes - sometimes you need to walk around a bit to see if they really fit. And if they don't? That's okay! A good therapist will understand and even help you find someone who's a better match.
